Her finger hesitated over the last control in the sequence.

Kristen Bishop frowned at her own romantic nature. It's just a machine, she told herself.

It was hard to think of her baby only in that light. She loved it just as a mother would a child.

She held her breath and touched the switch.

The dull roar that had filled her very soul for more than two years was gone. The big girl was quiet, deathly quiet.

The Chief Engineer of the U.S.S. Chamberlain turned to her engineering crew. "All drive systems are shut down. Let's get to work."
