"The Promise"

Mei-Wan knelt down in the cold New Hampshire rain, gliding her fingers slowly across the granite. Her heart ached at the thought of the small body a meter beneath her feet.

So much pain. So much lost, her mind wept.

She read the name on the headstone as she placed a single rose just below it.

Cindy Zachary...

Mei-Wan stood, and smiled at her memories of that happy child.

She had come here not only to remember the life which would never be, but to keep the promise she had made to a machine who had once been a man.
